Affordable Ways to Keep Your Senior Pet Healthy and Happy

It seems like only yesterday that your cute little puppy or kitten was slipping on the floor, trotting around. Now they’re showing the physical and/or behavioural changes that come with age, and it’s time to consider what modifications you can make so that they can live as healthy and happy as possible in their golden years.

From finding the right bed to creating a good exercise routine, here are some simple but-significant ways to care for an aging pet that won’t break the bank.

1. Get the supplies they need

When it comes to caring for a senior pet, there are many products on the market that help them stay healthy and happy. For instance, elevated bowls help senior pets avoid and mitigate neck strain, while elevated/heated beds help them sleep more comfortably amidst muscle and joint pain. A pet ramp can also help your pet easily get up and down furniture, vehicles, and other objects. These are just a few of the many products on the market that can improve the overall quality of life for older pets. If you’re into saving money (and who isn’t!), shop for affordable pet supplies and products at GrowingSquirrel!

2. Take them on vacation

What better way to spend quality time with your beloved fur-baby than to take them on vacation? If you’re heading out on a trip, make sure to carefully research the most dog-friendly locations and to find accommodations that allow pets. However, you may not always be able to bring your senior pet along when you leave town. So be sure to find a reliable, qualified pet sitter to care for your four-legged family member while you’re gone. Most sitters charge a reasonable rate, and the peace of mind will make it well worth the investment.

3. Keep up with vet visits

For most of your pet’s life, you’ve probably taken them to the vet about once a year. As they’re getting older, however, you’ll want to take them at least every six months. Along with staying in front of potential health issues, getting your pet regular exams will give you the opportunity to get professional medical advice from your vet as to how you can help your pet live as happy and pain-free as possible.

There are a number of options to consider for covering the costs of vet visits. For instance, you can ask your vet if they offer payment plans. You can look into organizations that assist people with vet bills, or you can apply for a medical credit card. And if it comes down to it, you can consider a home refinance if you own your home, and use some of the cash payment you receive to help pay your bills.

4. Modify their diet

Pets’ nutritional needs evolve over time. Your furry companion probably won’t be getting quite as much physical activity as they once did, which means that they will need to eat food with lower caloric content. Your pet may also need food with lots of Omega-3s, which can help with joint pain, among other things.

Consult your veterinarian, and research the plethora of senior pet foods out there to determine which one will best meet your pet’s needs. To save a little money in the process, consider supplementing some of your pet’s food with canned green beans.

5. Keep them active

Finally, while it will likely look different than it used to, it’s essential your pet still gets exercise in their golden years. This will help them to fight off heart disease, joint problems, and many other issues for as long as possible. Plus, pets are generally happier when they can get in a little exercise, and it gives you an opportunity to spend quality time together. Even if it’s going for short walks around the neighbourhood or quick visits to the park, prioritize exercise in your pet’s routine — it’s free!
